What is L-Carnitine?

L-carnitine is an essential molecule to burn fat, which is made by your own body from the amino acid lysine and vitamin C (another reason why you do not lack this vitamin). It is also found in many foods, especially in meat. The purpose of L-carnitine molecules is to help the long-chain fatty acids pass through the mitochondrial membrane in order to convert them into energy (this is done in the mitochondria) inside the cells.

The fatty acids that are delivered to cells, thanks to the circulatory system, need carnitine to transport them through the membrane of the mitochondria cell.
